Notes

23 records

This species was described from very deep water in the Western Pacific and in their recent revision of the tribe Archiconchoeciinae was designated by Chavtur and Stovbun (2003) as the type species of a new genus Archiconchoecissa. We are attributing the specimens originally described as Archiconchoeciacucullata Angel (1983) to this species together with further unpublished records from very deep water in the N.E.Atlantic. All the records are from samples collected from depths >3000m and so this species is abyssopelagic. In common with the majority of species caught at such depths, it is quite fragile and few specimens are collected in good condition. Their fragility almost certainly means that some of the illustrations are not entirely accurate. If the Atlantic specimens are confirmed as being conspecific with the original Pacific material, it implies that components of the abyssopelagic fauna are ubiquitous throughout the World’s deep oceans.
