Notes

122 Records

This was considered to be a subspecies of M. castanea until Martens (1979) raised it to full species status, and so the two species may have been confused in earlier records. Its latitudinal range is 55°S to 37°N in the Pacific, but only to 14°N in the Atlantic, where it is replaced by M. castanea to the north. Like castanea it has a chocolate-brown coloration that persists for many years after preservation, especially if the samples are kept in the dark.
