Notes

4 records

This is a large, three-spined species with striking sculpturing, belonging to a genus that was established by Deevey (1968) and currently includes 18 species. The genus is clearly heterogeneous and in need of revision. The species are predominantly deep-living and often benthopelagic. This species is unique in having has a large spine on each of the rostra and another at the posterior dorsal corner of the right carapace valve. All specimens have been collected in nets fished within 25m of the seabed at depths of 3760-5435m in the North-east Atlantic between 21° and 41°N. This is almost the entire geographical range of where such sampling has been undertaken, so little can be said about its full geographical range, apart from highlighting that benthopelagic environments are undersampled and are species rich. Systematically, it is intermediate between the seven-spined species like B. omega and some of the species with highly ornamented carapaces like kornickeri.
