Notes

4/5 records

This species was described by Deevey from deep water at two Eltanin stations in the Southern Ocean, and more were reported posthumously (1983) but the Eltanin stations at which they occurred were not specified. Two more recent records have come from deep benthopelagic samples collected from the Southern Ocean by the Polarstern in benthopelagic samples Very similar specimens have also been collected at abyssopelagic depths at stations both in the northeast and the northwest Atlantic; the latter has tentatively been attributed to this species, but the former shows significant differences to the type descriptions and is probably novel. Like most deep living species it is a very fragile species that is usually badly damaged during the sampling, and so its full description awaits the retrieval of material in better condition. This is one of the few species in Chavtur and Angel’s (in press) new tribe Metaconchoeciinae that has clear sculpturing on the carapace.
