Notes

37 records

This is an abyssopelagic species originally described from the North Pacific as a Conchoecia It has been found in the North Atlantic whenever sampling has been conducted at depths >3000m. Whether or not the two populations are of the same species needs to be critically examined. Fifteen of the records are from a single set of samples when repeated tows were made at depths around 3500m in the vicinity of 42°N 21°50’W. Like most abyssopelagic species it is a very fragile and seldom taken in good condition. So the Atlantic specimens may not be identical with those from the Pacific. Its known latitudinal range in the North Atlantic is 20°-50°N. Chavtur (1978) also reported it from 79°-87°N in samples collected during the Russian Ice Island Programme, but without giving precise positions.
