Summary

The central theme of my interests lies in the systematics and ecology of freshwater insects, the use of freshwater insects as environmental indicators, and public engagement in natural history. A major focus of my research and that of my research group is to investigate the response of freshwater ecosystems to climate change since the last ice age. We are developing quantitative temperature inference models based on chironomid midge assemblages, particularly in Europe, Russia, Patagonia and China, to improve our understanding of climate dynamics during periods of rapid climate change and improve the performance of global climate models in predicting future climate change. We are also interested in using palaeolimnological techniques to address questions of current conservation concern, for example the causes of declines in rare water birds, and to understand the responses and resilience of freshwater ecosystems during periods of rapid environmental change. We are currently investigating ways in which the Natural History Museum collections can be used to provide long-term data on biotic responses to climate change, for example, how the flight times and sizes of British butterflies are influenced by seasonal changes climate. Another important strand is to increase public engagement in science and the local environment, especially in developing simple but effective methods for non-scientists to monitor river water quality, ecosystem functioning and the results of river restoration. Finally I have a long-standing interest in the systematics of green lacewings (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae), especially unravelling the cryptic acoustic species of the important biocontrol agent Chrysoperla.

Introduction
