Prince George poses for birthday photo at Museum

22 July 2014

HRH Prince George's recent visit to Sensational Butterflies provided the setting for his official birthday pictures.

The Prince enjoyed a private visit to the Museum earlier this month with his mother, HRH The Duchess of Cambridge, who is Patron of the Museum. The Prince celebrates his first birthday today.

Sir Michael Dixon, Director of the Museum, said the Prince seemed to enjoy his visit to the outdoor butterfly house.

‘It was a real pleasure to host our Patron and her family earlier this month. They seemed to enjoy their visit, wandering through the tropical plants as brightly coloured butterflies took flight around them.

'It was delightful to see Prince George’s first experience of the Natural History Museum and I look forward to welcoming them again in the future,’ Sir Michael said.

Our Patron

The Duchess of Cambridge became Patron of the Museum in April 2013. Her first engagement as Patron was the screening of a gala preview screening of David Attenborough’s Natural History Museum Alive 3D in December last year.

Sir Michael Dixon was conferred the honour of Knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in June this year.

The Museum's Sensational Butterflies exhibition, with its host of free-flying live butterflies and moths, is open to the public until 14 September 2014.

Digital butterflies

Work is currently underway at the Museum to digitise 20 million specimens onto a database, starting with the UK and Irish lepidoptera collection (butterflies and moths).

The collection contains more than 500,000 butterfly specimens collected from the mid-1800s to the 1960s.
