For Year Six (ages 10-11) only
This streamed workshop introduces your Year Six class to the concepts that underpin evolution.
Travel through Earth's history searching for evidence of change over time. Your class will complete different challenges in this engaging workshop to look at real world examples and current research, make predictions and test their knowledge on evolution.
This workshop is an ideal introduction to the subject of evolution but is equally useful for reinforcing prior knowledge through interactive and engaging activities.

Session outline
During the workshop the class will be trained as scientists and they will go on a scientific mission to find out more about evolution. We will look at three questions:
- To explain what evolution is, we will look at how fossil evidence from the past can show changes in life on Earth over millions of years. To do so, the class will travel back with us on a timeline where we will challenge them to spot different living things and record it on our ‘Evolution of Life’ worksheet.
- To learn about why evolution happens we will use the example of how horses have evolved. The class will discuss differences between fossils, and they will sort foot bones from different ancient horses to show how adaptations help them survive as the environment changes. The class will be working in teams and you will use an interactive board as a class to arrange the feet.
- The final section will explore how evolution happens by learning about natural selection. To do so, the class will go on a scientific adventure to a tropical island! We will look at a real example of evolution happening now on the island to a population of lizards, and we will see how changing weather patterns are affecting this population. Your students will look at evidence and make predictions to understand what is happening to the lizards and what could happen to the population in the future.
