Lord Hall of Birkenhead CBE and David Craig join the Natural History Museum’s Board of Trustees

The Natural History Museum is pleased to announce two new members to its Board of Trustees

Lord Hall of Birkenhead CBE joins as the Public Engagement Trustee and David Craig as Digital Innovation Trustee, as appointed by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport. 

Chair of the Board of Trustees, Sir Patrick Vallance says, ‘I am delighted to welcome our two new Trustees. Lord Tony Hall and David Craig both bring a wealth of experience and will be great additions to our existing board at this exciting and important time for the Museum.’

Tony Hall is Chairman of the children’s social work charity Frontline and the film company Harder Than You Think Ltd.  He is Vice-Chairman of London Philharmonic Orchestra and a Trustee of The National Trust, The Paul Hamlyn Foundation and the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra.

He is former Chairman of the National Gallery, Director-General of the BBC, former Chief Executive of the Royal Opera House and former President of the European Broadcasting Union.  He was on the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and was Chair of the Cultural Olympiad Board.

While at the BBC Lord Hall launched Radio 5 live, BBC News 24, BBC News Online and BBC Parliament. He was Deputy Chairman of Channel 4 Television. He was awarded a CBE in 2006 and was made a life peer in 2010.

Lord Hall says, ‘This is a museum I love visiting and I’m thrilled to be joining its Board. I look forward to helping the team to entice even more people – young and old - to enjoy the wonders of the natural world and to help find solutions to the challenges we all share around climate change, the environment and biodiversity.'

David Craig is a recognised global leader in technology, innovation and data with 30 years of experience in financial markets, including natural capital technology and sustainability data.

He is co-chair of the Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) with over 1200 banking and corporate members. He sits on the advisory council of the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) and is a member of the International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits (IAPB).

David was the founder and CEO of Refinitiv, one of the world’s largest data, technology and transaction platform providers for financial markets operating in over 190 countries. Prior to this, he was founder and CEO of the Governance, Risk and Compliance business and head of strategy at Thomson Reuters and Reuters plc. David spent eight years as a partner at McKinsey focusing on technology, financial services, media and information clients.

He is also a Board member and advisor for Triple Private Equity, chairs the Corporate Board of Urban Synergy mentorship charity and is an Executive Fellow at London Business School, Strategy and Entrepreneurship Faculty.

David Craig says, ‘I am incredibly excited to support the team at the Museum, leveraging their deep expertise and scientific know-how to develop new, technology-enabled solutions and innovations, essential to help business, finance and societies where both people and planet thrive.’

Both Trustees will commence an initial four-year term from 1 November 2023.
